David Karlson is a life coach, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and a MN LMFT Board-Approved Supervisor based in St. Paul, MN who has been serving individuals, couples, and families since 2008. David is also a career Minnesota National Guard officer, having served in 5 overseas military deployments. He has overcome challenges that have shaped his deep understanding of resilience, relationships, and mental health. I also valued and appreciated his straightforward approach and willingness to call attention to specific issues, even when they may have been uncomfortable. For example, I recall clearly the conversation we had... it was one of those "swallow hard" moments, but ultimately was a good example of the kind of realities I needed to frame more clearly for myself. David was most effective in helping me reframe some of my perspectives on challenges I was facing. 

Talking to a stranger about my problems is very unnatural for me and initially I was really resistant to it. All my problems felt juvenile and not worth talking to a therapist about. But over time I started to feel more relaxed and not trivialize whatever problem was on my mind. One of the biggest impacts is that I judge myself less for the way I think or feel. Guilt, especially religious guilt, is something that I have a healthier relationship with.

We have seen so much growth in him. He has more confidence and is more willing to put himself out there. His ability to acknowledge and express his needs has been tremendous for him and our family. While he was hesitant to start therapy and struggled through sessions at times, there is no doubt by the end of their time together, he understood that therapy helped, and I dare say he even looked forward to it every week
